abstract = "Trajectory analysis of forest fragmentation in certain region is
important to understand the space and the transformations that
take place in the landscape. The purpose of this study was
assessed the forest fragmentation trajectory in the North Rio
Grande do Sul in course of twenty-five years (1986 to 2011),
aiming to provide subsidies to environmental conservation and
establishment of priority areas for the biodiversity maintenance.
Images scene of Land 5 satellite Tm sensor were used for mapping
of the use and cover land and the trajectory. Through the
application of geoprocessing techniques were carried out the
processing of digital images, standard sample collection, use and
cover land classification and quantification of the vegetal native
category. Over the period, it was possible to observe changes in
the region landscape, these related with the decrease of the area
occupied by agricultural uses, 21,46%, and the increase in area
occupied by vegetal native uses and pasture 11,70% and 8,46%,
respectively. This increase is connected to the abandon of
agricultural areas, with low mechanization capacity for being in
slope areas. Temporal analysis showed a increase in area to
76029,00 acres, and a increase in number of fragments to 2314.
Forest fragments in the study region are represented, in majority
(around 90%), for small fragments showing that the region still
having a high fragmentation degree. Larger fragments increased,
showing a tendency to an improvement in environmental condition.
Two important processes that are taking place in the region
landscape are highlighted: forest regeneration and connectivity.",
